For more than 10 years, initiates of the Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have been gathering at the fraternity's general conventions for a reunion. During those reunions, Bro. Emmitt Bashful encouraged the brothers to make donations to fund scholarships to assist the current members of the chapter. Dr. Bashful's initiative and drive help the college brothers led to the establishment of the Beta Sigma Alumni Foundation. The foundation was granted 501c status by the Internal Revenue Service in early 2006 and at the reunion held at the fraternity's centennial convention later that summer in Washingon D.C., elected the first officers. The foundation has continued to raise funds and in 2007, awarded its first scholarships. Going forward, members of the foundation will take a more active role in assisting the college brothers through mentoring and support of their activities.
